Director S.S. Rajamouli's "Bahubali- The Beginning" is visually monumental, spectacular and colossal. A fiction drafted by V. Vijayendra Prasad and narrated in a melodramatic manner with fantasy, songs and epic battle scenes, it is a tale of a prince who is unaware of his identity.

Story:

The film begins with a brief geographical layout of the kingdoms of Maheshmati and Kunthala and that of Singapuram's Bandits. And, with picturesque high waterfalls as the backdrop, the tale begins dramatically with a woman, carrying an infant in her arms and an arrow piercing her back, fleeing from her tormentors.

After a brief fight and successfully eliminating those chasing her, the lady slips into the gushing waters of the Ganges and drowns, but holding him up in one hand, above the waters, till he is rescued.

The child, now raised as Shivudu (Prabhas), by a foster mother Sangha, is curious about the waterfalls and the land beyond. And one day, when he is about 25 years old, after he finds a mask washed ashore, he is determined to explore the forbidden land.

So after scaling the water falls, he meets Avantika (Tamannaah) a rebel citizen of Maheshmati. Romance brews and soon he is embroiled in the politics of the land and the eventuality is predictable.

Technical Aspects:

Baahubali is by far the most technically brilliant film that has come out from Indian cinema. Each and every frame in the film is sheer magic. The sets, VFX work and graphics are just out of this world. One should be really proud to see such grand visuals especially in a Telugu film. Music is decent but the background score could have been better.

Sabu Cyril has done a marvelous job with the sets. Be it the palace sets, the kingdom surroundings or the warfare equipment, everything looks impressive. Senthil Kumar’s camera work is mind blowing. His awesome visuals are nicely complimented by the stunning VFX. The water fall scenes and some shots during the fight sequence with Kaalakeya have been executed brilliantly.

The way Rajamouli has conceptualized the visuals will be a learning lesson for a generation of aspiring film makers. Even though Rajamouli’s screenplay dips a bit here and there, his larger than life approach is what makes this film such a visual treat.

Performances:

Prabhas: A Star Hero dedicating over 2 years of his life for a single film is something very rare to happen. He has put in his heart & soul into the project, which is quite evident while watching the movie. Showcased the variations in the Characters of Sivudu and Baahubali exceptionally well.

Rana Daggubati is a revelation in this movie. He is powerful and menacing as Bhallaladeva. No matter how many films he does in his entire career, 'Baahubali' will always be his favourite as it gave him scope to unleash his full potential.

Tamanna as Avantika looks nothing short of an angel, particularly the manner in which transformation from de-glamorised to glamorous was shown in a romantic sequence is appreciable. Anushka aka Devasena is hard to digest for those who admire her beauty. She shines in a scenes with Satya Raj in the First Half, reminds use of 'Arundathi' sequence here.

Ramya Krishna is powerful in a role signifying 'Epitome-of-Justice'. After Nilambari, Its Sivagami for this Yesteryear Actress. Nassar as Bijjaladeva is venemous. Satya Raj as Kattappa, the slave warrior, contributes majorly during the hero elevation scenes. Prabhakar as ruthless Kalakeya is deadly. Sudeep as Aslaam Khan is perfect. Rest of the cast is equally good in their respective roles.

i-Rating: 3.5/5
